Illustrated with 24 full-page, full-color plates, with head and tail-pieces engraved by MM. Rougeron and Vignerot, after the watercolours of MM. Alfred Paris, Le Blant. Delort and Maurice Orange. The cover and the four frontispieces were executed by the same engravers, after the compositions and watercolours of M. A.Giraldon. Charles Bigot (1840-1893) was a French historian, teacher, and journalist who is best known for this work, Glories and Military Memories, a highly impressive and beautifully illustrated history of the French military. The volume was based on the memoirs of several French military heros; the canonnier Bricard, Marshal Bugeaud, Captain Coignet, d'Amédée Delorme, helmsman Ducor, General Ducrot, Maurice Dupin, Lieutenant-General the Duc de Fezensac, Sergeant Fricasse, the Abbé Lanusse, General de Marbot, Marshal Marmont Duc de Raguze, Charles Mismer, Colonel de Montagnac, Napoleon I, Marshal of Saint-Arnaud, Count Philippe de Ségur, General de Sonis, and Colonel Vigo-Roussillon. Text in French.. Corners and edges very lightly shelf-worn, else fine; unmarked, tight, square, and clean, with strong hinges and all illustrations bright aand fresh. An extremely nice copy. War Years with Jeb Stuart
NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1946. 1st Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover. Illustrated with B&W photographs. W. W. Blackford was a Confederate army officer and civil engineer. A native of Fredericksburg who studied engineering at the University of Virginia, Blackford worked as acting chief engineer for the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad. At the start of the American Civil War (1861–1865), he joined the 1st Virginia Cavalry and became an aide-de-camp for its commander, J. E. B. Stuart. He fought with the Confederate cavalry from the Seven Days’ Battles in June 1862 until the end of the war, suffering two wounds and being promoted to lieutenant colonel. After the war, Blackford worked for a railroad in Lynchburg, owned and operated a sugar plantation in Louisiana, and was a college professor in Blacksburg. He worked for the railroads again before retiring in 1890. His Civil War letters have been used by historians, and his memoir of the war was published in 1946 with an introduction by Douglas Southall Freeman. Blackford died in Princess Anne County in 1905. Gilt on spine and cover mildly faded, old small bookseller's label on fep, else near fine; unmarked, tight, square, and clean. VERY GOOD.
